PIM (Project Information Modeling)- The Future of Project Planning & Execution

The Civil Engineering & Project execution sector in India follows the trends prevailing in the developed Nations, albeit unfortunately with a huge time lag. While this prevents us from exploiting the full potential of advances in Technology & gives a head start to other Countries over us, it also results in our Engineers waking up to the benefits of a new Technology only after it has become stale, stagnation has set in & our counterparts in other parts of the World are already reaping up the benefits of the next big innovation. BIM or Building Information Technology is one such thing that most of our Professionals in the Government as well as Private Sector are either not even aware of, or have a superficial knowledge only which cannot be leveraged by them in a fruitful manner. While we are yet to come to terms with this now very popular Application that has now almost become a norm internationally, the World is staring into the rise of PIM or Project Information Modeling, the next natural evolution of BIM, using a combination of Software Applications & synchronizing the output in a coordinated & compact Information Model. If BIM was a trailer, PIM would be the main show; if BIM was a Vista, PIM may turn out to be a whole new horizon. Interestingly, PIM is in a very nascent stage right now & if India takes proper notice of it & laps up every bit of knowledge available in various domains, this is one area where we may turn out to be the pioneers of this powerful concept.

Advantage PIM:

  • Availability of a highly informative & collaborative 3D Virtual Model encompassing a whole gamut of extensive information.
  • Dependable Cost Estimation.
  • Stage- wise verification of payable quantities for validation of Payments.
  • Clash Detection/ Conflict resolution at an early stage leading to savings in unnecessary rectification costs & Contractors’ Claims.
  • Generation of Bar Bending Schedules
  • Final Comparison between ‘Planned’ & ‘As Built Drawings’ for easy processing of Variation Claims.
  • Easy visualization for various participants such as Contractors, Sub- Contractors, Masons, Plumbers, Electricians, HVAC Teams, Carpenters, Fabricators, Shuttering Contractors & Scaffolders and Bar- Benders etc.
  • Helpful in Activity sequencing & generation of Fabrication Shop Drawings.
  • Material Forecasting & Management.
  • The virtual progress of the Project may be viewed in a time phased manner through simulation.

Conclusion:  PIM or Project Information Modeling is BIM taken to the next level. While BIM is mainly related to Building Construction, PIM incorporates the use of BIM Softwares such as Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, Revit MEP coupled with Navisworks, Civil 3D & Project Management Softwares like Primavera etc. to provide a 360º detailing of Complex Projects such as HEPs, WTPs, STPs, Stadiums, Airports & the likes.
